WESLACO, TX – During the week of February 13-18, this town suffered terribly as a result of a major winter storm in Texas. The Valley of Tears had not undergone a climate change like this since 1984. Some say it is a punishment from God while others say that the climate change is due to the capitalists putting a lot of chemicals into the environment. Just for wanting to make money off whatever.
In the Rio Grande Valley, thousands of farm workers were jobless as vegetables and citrus fruits were frozen. The farmers offered to pay $25 per box to raise the onion harvest. But, how can they do that when practically no one had electricity and water?
The owners of the packaging sheds and ranchers lost nothing. When they announced that their losses were more than $30 million, Governor Greg Abbott soon declared that the frost was a disaster to ensure that these farmers were helped by the federal government. Meanwhile, the agricultural workers got nothing.
These workers suffer in the poorest neighborhoods. Up to three families live in a home with only one or two bedrooms. These workers are essential and are used for packing fruits and vegetables. But the ranchers do not care about their living conditions.
Texas has an unregulated electricity system where little money is invested but the maximum profit is made. Abbott at first claimed that it was due to the Green New Deal. But soon they had to point the finger at those responsible: the council that regulates the sale of electricity.
Then we have Senator Ted Cruz, who instead of taking leadership in the matter, fled with his family fled to the warmth of Cancún, México.
These politicians must be replaced with true representatives of the people, who have no ties to the corporations. This can be achieved only and when we participate in the process for change for the benefit of we workers.
