This August the nation honored voting rights activist and now a legend for our history books John Lewis ‘The Boy from Troy’. John would want us to raise his voice and dreams of freedom. He and Rev. C.T. Vivian who recently also passed would want us to spend the next days before the elections to get everyone to register and to vote.
Both of these men fought along with many others to secure the right to vote and knew that conservative elements will do everything to suppress the vote.
Our challenge is for all of us to do something and make a difference.
I stood in line with thousands of others outside the Georgia state capitol as we waited to be given an opportunity to stand next to the coffin with John Lewis. There was a wonderful mixture of individuals and I know that John would want all those who came to honor him in Alabama, Washington D.C. and Atlanta show up to the polls in November.
We must honor John Lewis by doing everything in our power to ensure that this election and the voting procedures are protected.
