NEW ORLEANS — We are fighting the deportation of Joel López Palma, a Hard Rock Hotel worker. Joel reported safety violations five times before the collapse but the company ignored it. Joel was deported despite being a key witness on the causes of the collapse of the hotel.  We roundly condemn ICE’s actions. This deportation separated a man from his wife and his three children, and has exiled him from his 18-year-old community. Even more, Joel’s deportation protects a culture of corruption and impunity that one month ago killed three workers and injured many more. Violating the rights of immigrant workers harms everyone’s safety. It is essential that we unite to defend ourselves against abuse, exploitation, and impunity.
