College can be a scary experience, especially when you’re undocumented. My first week of college I looked for a group that I could connect with regarding my status. To my dismay I found out that there was no club for undocumented students at my college. As I started to join other organizations and meet new people, I realized how necessary a Dreamers Club was.
In my second semester I started to meet more international students, some of whom had DACA. While the majority of DACA recipients are of Latinx descent, I met several others who were of various other ethnicities. Even though they came from different cultures, I was still able to connect with them through our undocumented experience.
While it may have been easier to branch off a Latin American club, I decided that starting a brand new club was truly necessary. I thought back to my first week in college and how I searched for a club that was exclusively about the undocumented experience. I also thought of the non-Latinx international students who wouldn’t be able to truly connect with the Latinx experience. Undocumented students share a lot of similar fears, questions, and experiences and it is important we have a safe space to share that with each other.
The club I hope to start in the upcoming year will provide resources to undocumented students such as scholarship opportunities, information regarding DACA, and updates on political decisions regarding immigrants. Additionally, I also plan on emphasizing the importance of mental health. Oftentimes we forget to take care of ourselves in the midst of dealing with our responsibilities. Although resources are constantly being offered to undocumented students, there is a rarely a place where Dreamers can connect with each other and share their experiences. Whether it is talking about how they came to the U.S. or their college struggles, Dreamers should have hate-free space where they can freely speak of their experience.
In the current administration, it is easy to feel attacked by the media and the government when you are undocumented. Dreamers are not only paranoid about potential ICE raids but on top of that we are also left with the question of what is going to happen to DACA or if the DREAM Act will ever pass. The club will aim to reassure Dreamers that they belong and that their dreams are worth fighting for. Undocumented Students and Allies (U.S.A.) will be for Dreamers, by Dreamers.
La universidad puede ser una experiencia aterradora, especialmente cuando no estás documentado. Mi primera semana de universidad busqué un grupo con el que pudiera conectarme con respecto a mi estado. Para mi sorpresa, descubrí que no había un club para estudiantes indocumentados en mi universidad. Cuando comencé a unirme a otras organizaciones y conocer gente nueva, me di cuenta de lo necesario que era un Dreamers Club.
En mi segundo semestre empecé a conocer a más estudiantes internacionales, algunos de los cuales tenían DACA. A pesar de que la mayoría de los destinatarios de DACA son de ascendencia latina, conocí a varios otros que eran de otras etnias. Aunque vinieron de diferentes culturas, aún pude conectarme con ellos a través de nuestra experiencia indocumentada.
Si bien puede haber sido más fácil dividirse en un club latinoamericano, decidí que comenzar un nuevo club era realmente necesario. Pensé en mi primera semana en la universidad y en cómo busqué un club que tratara exclusivamente de la experiencia indocumentada. También pensé en los estudiantes internacionales que no podrían conectarse realmente con la cultura Latinx. Los estudiantes indocumentados comparten muchos miedos, preguntas y experiencias similares y es importante que tengamos un espacio seguro para compartir eso con los demás.
El club que espero comenzar el próximo año proporcionará recursos a estudiantes indocumentados, como oportunidades de becas, información sobre DACA y actualizaciones sobre decisiones políticas con respecto a los inmigrantes. Además, también planeo enfatizar la importancia de la salud mental. Muchas veces nos olvidamos de cuidarnos a nosotros mismos en medio de nuestras responsabilidades. Aunque los recursos se ofrecen constantemente a los estudiantes indocumentados, rara vez hay un lugar donde los Dreamers puedan conectarse entre ellos y compartir sus experiencias. Ya sea que se trate de cómo llegaron a los EE. UU. O sus luchas universitarias, los Dreamers deberían tener espacio libre de odio donde puedan hablar libremente de su experiencia.
En la administración actual, es fácil sentirse atacado por los medios y el gobierno cuando no estás documentado. Los soñadores no solo son paranoicos acerca de las posibles redadas de ICE, sino que además nos queda la pregunta de qué va a pasar con DACA o si el DREAM Act alguna vez pasará. El club tendrá como objetivo tranquilizar a los Dreamers que pertenecen y que sus sueños valen la pena luchar. Los estudiantes y aliados indocumentados (EE. UU.) Serán para Dreamers, de Dreamers.
