Statement by David Vasquez & Migrant Workers Defense Committee

 

HOUSTON, TEXAS—Call to Action to stop the low-wage, and slave labor working conditions and the unjust detention of human-rights/ labor leader David Vasquez. Vasquez at one of the largest detention centers for undocumented men appealing their pending unjust deportation orders in U.S.

Vasquez helped organize one of the largest hunger strikes ever at a huge privately managed detention center north of Houston. Up to 1200 undocumented detainees and workers at the GEO managed Joe Corley Detention Center in Texas and at the ICE Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington carried out two of the largest hunger-strikes ever carried out by a detainee population in the United States.

Vasquez lost his habeas court hearing in a Harris County district court on July 2, 2014. Vasquez has a new lawyer who filed an appeal on July 10, 2014 of the court’s July 2, 2014 denial. Vasquez now faces deportation and separation from family and friends after spending 28 years in the U.S. and 24 years as an asbestos-removal worker.

Vazquez left El Salvador in 1986. He’s also a pastor and volunteer worker with young people. Vazquez has given 20 years of service to low-income and needy youth. He continues to help young detainees at the detention center.
