On June 4th the courageous workers of the Our Walmart organization continued their three-year campaign by staging a one day unfair labor practice strike against Walmart stores all over the country. According to one of the strike leaders, “We are on ULP strike to stop retaliation, fair wages, affordable benefits, and respect for all of us.”
Strikers marched in front of a newly opened “Neighborhood Market” in Coachella, California for an hour and a half in the mid-day heat. Many shoppers showed their support in this town that has a strong union tradition dating back to the organizing drives of Cesar Chavez and the United Farmworkers Union during the 1970s. Then they loaded into vans to drive into downtown Los Angeles to join a larger protest later in the day.
They are part of a growing movement by low-wage workers all over the country. Last month workers at fast food restaurants also staged a one-day strike in their fight for higher wages. Also, there are campaigns in several states and cities to raise the minimum wage. Seattle just passed a law raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour, which shows that it is possible to win against the corporations who are enforcing poverty wages while they reap gigantic profits. While millions suffer in poverty, the corporate owners like Walmart’s Walton family accumulate wealth in gigantic amounts. Thank you, Our Walmart strikers for leading the way.
