Stop the Repression, Stop the Deportations

CALIFORNIA—Organizations in this state have been very busy since the beginning of the new year. Grassroots pro-immigrant rights organization held a press conference outside the Border Patrol Office in Murrieta in response to a rise in raids across the region. In Indio they also protest the increase in raids, arrests and deportations. In San Jose Latinos United for a New America (LUNA) keeps fighting for the Latino community.

California cannot wait for comprehensive immigration reform to be approved. Since January 1, 2014, many laws came into effect that protect immigrants. The TRUST Act is the law that forbids the police from handing over to ICE or “the migra” people that are undocumented and without a criminal record. Safe Communities is poison—they have deported two million people. The TRUST Act is a remedy against the poison. The solution is a fair and human immigration reform.

The answer of ICE and “the migra” regarding these laws has been REPRESSION. There is a large operation in Southern California and Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. In the Coachella Valley official and non-official cars contain uniformed immigration officers, or officers simply dressed as civilians, detaining many people, arriving at bus stations with ICE in front of a church. Fear is felt everywhere.

On Wednesday, February 5, more than 30 people protested in front of the Border Patrol Station in Indio, CA. We raised our voices demanding: STOP THE DEPORTATIONS!

Repressing our community will not stop the fight for immigration reform. “The migra” and ICE must stop their operations. Unity makes strength, and you can support this movement by asking Obama to stop deportations with an executive order. Stop false promises. We do not want to hear words—we want actions.

Obama must act now to stop deportations and give deferred action to undocumented who have no criminal record until immigration reform is approved.
