The Opportunity to Live in Peace

The Tribuno del Pueblo recently interviewed Jose Sandoval, director of Voluntarios de la Comunidad in San Jose, California.

Tribuno del Pueblo: What was the most important success of the May 1 march in San Jose?

Jose Sandoval: The participation of so many people was beautiful. They let their feelings be known about immigration reform.

They were also very united. All the groups, workers, churches, non-profit organizations, unions, all came together around the same demands. We were united for an immigration reform that will protect all our civil, labor, and human rights.

We already know that the law coming out of Congress will not support all of our rights. But we have to continue to battle anyway, to get this bill passed, and then keep on afterward until we win the jobs, benefits, housing, health care, and education we need.

At this moment, we are also supporting the movement of the people of Michoacán to protect their towns from attacks by organized crime. There are two million Michoacanos in the United States, and we all have family members in danger there.

We support them because they are fighting for the same thing we want here — the opportunity to live in peace and work for a better future for our families.
